The design of driveways is critical in access management in that it affects the speed
of traffic turning into and out of driveways. This in turn affects the speed differential
between through traffic and turning traffic. Large speed differentials are created
when driveways are inadequately designed. Large speed differentials are associated
with higher crash rates and diminished traffic operations.
Driveway designs should always be based on the results of a study of the traffic likely
to use them; these guidelines are presented to illustrate good practices for driveway
designs.
